Muthoot Microfin Q2 Profit Jumps 263% to ₹110.8 Crore

Muthoot Microfin posted a record quarterly profit of ₹110.8 crore for Q2 FY27, marking a 263% year-on-year rise. The company achieved this through record loan disbursements of ₹2,900 crore and improved profit margins. Investors are watching how the lender sustains asset quality and credit costs as it diversifies its loan mix toward individual segments.

Muthoot Microfin Ltd has crossed the ₹100-crore quarterly profit milestone for the first time, reporting a profit after tax of ₹110.8 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 financial year. This performance represents a 263% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth was driven by a record ₹2,900 crore in loan disbursements, representing a 28% increase and pushing the total loan portfolio to ₹15,323 crore as of September 30.

Margin Expansion and Lower Operating Costs

The lender saw significant improvement in its operational efficiency during the quarter. Net interest margins, which represent the profit earned on loans after accounting for borrowing costs, expanded by 50 basis points to reach 12.5%. This improvement was supported by a decline in the average cost of borrowing, which settled in the single digits at 9.93%. The company also managed its operating expenses effectively, with the cost-to-income ratio improving to 48.1% from 53.7% in the previous quarter. This combination of lower funding costs and better cost management contributed significantly to the rise in pre-provision operating profit.

Asset Quality and Portfolio Diversification

Asset quality metrics showed improvement, with gross non-performing assets falling to 3.38%, a 123-basis-point reduction compared to the previous year. The company is actively working to diversify its revenue streams, with loans outside the traditional joint-liability group model—referred to as non-JLG loans—now accounting for 31% of the total portfolio. This shift is intended to reduce reliance on group-lending products. Additionally, digital adoption has gained momentum, with 47% of collections now being processed through digital channels, compared to 25% in the same period last year.

Risks and Future Monitorables

While the financial performance reflects growth, investors may keep a close eye on risks inherent to the microfinance sector. These include potential fluctuations in collection efficiency, which can impact profitability if credit costs rise. Although the company has expanded its non-JLG portfolio to 31%, this segment carries different risk profiles compared to traditional group lending, making it a key area for monitoring. The ability to maintain asset quality at 3.38% while managing the cost of funds will remain important as the company continues to scale its operations. Investors will likely look for updates on collection trends and the stability of credit costs in the coming quarters.
