Motilal Oswal Sells 2% Stake in Molbio; HDFC MF Acquires

Motilal Oswal Alternates sold a 2% stake in Molbio Diagnostics for ₹306 crore, with HDFC Mutual Fund emerging as the buyer. In a separate deal, Innova Captab shares dropped 9% after promoter Gian Parkash Aggarwal sold a 2.71% stake, even though SBI Mutual Fund purchased a portion of the equity.

Motilal Oswal Alternates has continued reducing its holding in Molbio Diagnostics. Through its investment vehicle, Business Excellence Trust III, the firm sold 23.28 lakh shares, representing a 2% stake in the diagnostics company. The transaction was valued at approximately ₹306.26 crore, executed at an average price of ₹1,315.01 per share.

HDFC Mutual Fund was the primary buyer in this transaction, acquiring 23 lakh shares at ₹1,315 each. This entry by a major institutional investor appears to have improved market sentiment for the stock. Molbio Diagnostics shares closed 4.07% higher at ₹1,309.45 on the BSE following the deal. This sale marks the second divestment by Business Excellence Trust III in recent days, following a 2.6% stake sale last week for ₹394 crore.

Promoter Selling at Innova Captab

In a separate open market development, pharmaceutical player Innova Captab experienced significant volatility. Promoter Gian Parkash Aggarwal liquidated a 2.71% stake in the company, selling 15.50 lakh shares at an average price of ₹1,080.04 per share, totaling ₹167 crore.

While SBI Mutual Fund stepped in to absorb part of the selling, acquiring 8.33 lakh shares (approximately 1.45% of the company) for ₹90 crore, the stock reaction was negative. Despite the institutional buying, broader market selling pressure caused Innova Captab shares to fall by 9%, closing at ₹1,158.15 on the BSE.

Understanding Block Deals

For investors, these transactions highlight the difference between exit strategies and institutional accumulation. When a private equity or investment firm like Motilal Oswal sells a stake, it is often part of a standard exit process to book profits or rebalance their portfolio. When a mutual fund steps in to buy, it can signal confidence in the company's long-term business model, which can support the share price.

Conversely, when a promoter or insider sells shares, investors often look closely at the reasons behind the move. While these sales can be for personal liquidity or other financial needs, they may sometimes create temporary uncertainty or negative pressure on the stock price, as seen with Innova Captab. Investors may track future exchange filings to see if there are any further changes in promoter shareholding or institutional buying patterns.
