Motilal Oswal Q2 Profit Rises 198%; Gains Custodian License

Motilal Oswal Financial Services reported a 198% jump in quarterly profit to ₹1,081 crore, boosted by a significant increase in fair value gains. The company also secured a SEBI custodian license to expand its institutional services. Investors should note that the results include substantial non-operating income alongside a strategic shift toward asset management revenue.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd reported a strong financial performance for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, with consolidated net profit rising to ₹1,080.74 crore, compared to ₹362.42 crore in the same period a year ago. The company's operational revenue grew by 64.4% to ₹3,041.67 crore. A major contributor to the jump in net profit was a sharp rise in fair value gains, which reached ₹833.05 crore, a significant increase from ₹9.15 crore in the prior-year quarter.

For investors, understanding the source of earnings is important. While the profit growth is notable, it is heavily influenced by gains from fair value changes rather than just core operational activity alone. The company is actively moving away from income streams dependent on volatile stock market trading, which is reflected in a 5% decline in profit within its capital markets segment.

In contrast, the company’s focus on asset and wealth management continues to show stability. This segment now contributes 43% of the total operating profit. The asset management arm reported a 69% increase in profit after tax to ₹304 crore. The management has stated that approximately two-thirds of the company's total revenue now comes from recurring sources, which is intended to provide a buffer against market swings.

Beyond current financial results, the company has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India to act as a custodian of securities. This license will allow Motilal Oswal to offer services such as trade settlement, safekeeping, and corporate action processing for institutional clients. These operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. This expansion into institutional custodial services aims to broaden the company's revenue base further.

The group maintains an AA+/Stable credit rating, which generally indicates a stable financial outlook. As the company transitions toward more recurring revenue streams, investors may track the progress of the new custodial business and the long-term consistency of profit margins as the company pivots further into asset management.
