E-commerce firm Meesho is facing total tax demands exceeding ₹2,000 crore for the recent financial years. The company is actively challenging these notices in court. While Meesho reported strong user and revenue growth in FY26, investors are closely watching how these mounting tax and GST disputes could affect its balance sheet and long-term profitability.
E-commerce platform Meesho is currently dealing with a significant rise in tax-related disputes, with total demands amounting to approximately ₹2,071.8 crore for the financial year 2025-26. These demands follow a series of notices from tax authorities that the company is now contesting through legal channels. The situation represents a significant regulatory and financial challenge for the platform as it works to maintain its growth trajectory.
The bulk of these demands stems from income tax assessments. For the Assessment Year 2023-24, authorities issued a demand for ₹1,499.73 crore after making additions to the company’s taxable income. This follows an earlier demand of ₹572 crore from FY25. Additionally, the company is also facing a Goods and Services Tax (GST) demand of approximately ₹14.3 crore related to tax collected at source (TCS) provisions. Meesho has responded by filing appeals with the National Faceless Appeal Centre and has successfully secured stay orders in some instances to challenge these assessments.
Business Performance Amid Regulatory Hurdles
Despite the pressure from these ongoing legal disputes, Meesho’s FY26 financial performance showed strong operational expansion. The company reported a significant jump in revenue to ₹12,626 crore, compared to ₹9,390 crore in the previous year. Losses also narrowed, falling to ₹1,358 crore from ₹3,942 crore in FY25. This improvement reflects the company's efforts to balance rapid scaling with cost management, though profitability remains a work in progress.
Operational metrics highlight the platform's reach in the Indian market. The annual report indicated a 33% growth in the user base, which has now reached 26.4 crore. Furthermore, the number of transacting sellers on the platform rose by 87% to 9.61 lakh. The management has attributed these gains to continued investment in technology and user acquisition, which it believes will build a more sustainable and efficient network for the long term.
Investor Monitorables
For investors, the immediate focus lies on the outcome of these tax and GST disputes. While the company is challenging the demands, any unfavorable legal ruling could lead to cash outflows that might strain liquidity or impact the company's financial flexibility. Given that Meesho is continuing to invest heavily in its business model—which currently prioritizes a larger, more engaged user base over immediate bottom-line profit—any unexpected tax liability could complicate its path to achieving consistent profitability.
Investors should track the upcoming court proceedings, any further regulatory disclosures from the company regarding these liabilities, and management commentary on how the company plans to manage these potential financial impacts while continuing its growth strategy.
