Mahindra Finance Q1 Profit Rises 31% YoY on Higher Disbursements

Mahindra Finance reported a 31% increase in core earnings for Q1 FY27, supported by strong tractor and passenger vehicle financing. While net interest margins tightened to 7.3% due to higher liquidity holdings, the company maintained a stable return on assets of 2.4%. Investors are monitoring the company’s ability to sustain this growth in its core mobility segment while expanding its new business lines.

Detailed Coverage

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, commonly known as Mahindra Finance, reported a strong start to the new fiscal year with a 31 percent year-on-year growth in core earnings for the quarter ended June 2026. This performance was primarily fueled by record-high disbursements in the tractor and passenger vehicle segments, which together account for half of the company's total assets under management.

Impact of Liquidity and Margin Trends

The company’s net interest margins—a measure of the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on borrowings—saw a sequential decline of 20 basis points, settling at 7.3 percent. This dip was largely attributed to the company holding a liquidity buffer of Rs 5,000 crore. However, this margin pressure was balanced by an increase in fee-based income and lower credit costs, which allowed the company to keep its return on assets stable at 2.4 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Asset quality remained a focal point for the company, as it reported that the combined gross Stage 2 and 3 asset ratio reached an eight-quarter low of 8.3 percent. While the gross Stage 3 asset quality ratio showed a minor increase to 3.5 percent, management emphasized that collection efforts and slippages remained under control throughout the quarter.

Strategic Growth and Market Outlook

Looking ahead, Mahindra Finance has outlined an ambition to achieve a 16-18 percent compound annual growth rate in its assets under management. The company plans to divide its focus between its established core mobility business, projected to grow at 11-12 percent, and its newer business segments, which are expected to expand at a faster rate of 28-30 percent. A key part of this strategy involves using digital tools to improve loan processing speeds and targeting growth in rural demand.

Trading at 1.6 times its estimated book value for FY28, the stock has reflected investor optimism regarding the company's diversification efforts and its improved asset quality. The company’s continued emphasis on a higher share of secured lending is intended to keep credit costs stable, even if market conditions change. The next major monitorables for investors will be the company’s ability to maintain asset quality as it expands into newer segments and the impact of interest rate cycles on its borrowing costs and net interest margins.
