L&T Finance to Open 3,000 Gold Loan Branches as Portfolio Soars 182%

L&T Finance is aggressively expanding its gold loan network, aiming for 3,000 branches within five years to capture a larger market share. This follows a 182% surge in its gold portfolio to ₹3,829 crore in the first quarter of FY27, as the firm pivots toward secured retail assets.

L&T Finance has outlined an aggressive expansion plan for its gold loan business, setting a target to scale its network to between 2,500 and 3,000 branches over the next five years. Currently, the company operates 343 active branches dedicated to this segment. The plan involves opening at least 500 new outlets every year, signaling a major push to capture a larger portion of India’s organized gold loan market, which remains largely dominated by unorganized players.

The aggressive growth strategy comes on the back of a significant performance jump in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. L&T Finance reported its gold loan portfolio reached ₹3,829 crore, a 182% increase compared to ₹1,360 crore in the same period last year. This rapid growth was supported by the company’s integration of the Paul Merchants Finance gold loan portfolio, which was acquired in June 2025. Consolidated net profit for the quarter also showed strength, rising 31% year-on-year to reach ₹916 crore.

For investors, this expansion represents a strategic pivot toward secured retail lending. Currently, gold loans contribute approximately 3% to the company’s total loan book of ₹1.3 trillion. Management aims to increase this contribution to over 10% by 2031. By shifting toward gold-backed products, the company is attempting to improve the quality of its loan book by focusing on assets that are easier to recover in the event of a default, compared to unsecured personal or consumer loans.

While the growth figures are high, the expansion involves substantial operational and capital spending. Unlike digital-only lending models, gold loans require physical infrastructure, including high-security vaults and trained staff at every location, which adds to the company's operating costs. The success of this strategy will depend on the company's ability to maintain healthy profit margins despite the high setup costs and intense competition from specialized gold loan lenders and banks that are also expanding their reach.

Another important aspect for investors is the potential for asset quality risks if the gold loan market faces pricing pressure or if gold prices fluctuate significantly. While the loan is backed by collateral, the company must manage execution risk—the challenge of opening 500 branches every year while ensuring they are profitable and attracting enough customers to cover the high overhead costs.

The key monitorables for the coming quarters will be the pace of branch additions, the consistency of the growth rate in the gold segment, and whether the company can maintain stable profit margins while absorbing the high costs of setting up a national physical footprint. Investors may also track how much of this new capacity is being effectively used to generate revenue compared to the costs incurred.
