Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has paid a record ₹12,207.25 crore dividend to the government for FY2026. This payout follows shareholder approval for a ₹10 per share final dividend, reflecting the insurer's robust financial health and strong asset base of ₹59.03 lakh crore.
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has handed over a dividend cheque of ₹12,207.25 crore to the Central Government. This significant payment marks the government's share of the final dividend for the financial year ended March 31, 2026. The payout follows the approval of the dividend at the company's 5th Annual General Meeting held on July 27, 2026.
Strong Shareholder Support for Dividend
During the meeting, shareholders approved a final dividend of ₹10 per equity share. The resolution received overwhelming support, with over 99.99 per cent of the votes cast in favor. The voting process, conducted electronically between July 23 and July 26, 2026, also saw the adoption of the company's standalone and consolidated financial statements for the fiscal year.
Beyond the dividend payout, shareholders sanctioned material related-party transactions involving LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Limited. This approval was obtained in compliance with SEBI regulations, which require the exclusion of promoter and related-party votes for such matters. Shareholders also cleared the appointment of Zonal and Divisional Auditors.
Financial Context and Growth
LIC, which recently marked 70 years of operations, reported a total asset base of ₹59.03 lakh crore as of March 31, 2026. This large asset size is a primary factor in the company’s ability to generate steady returns and maintain its status as a major contributor to government revenue. As a state-owned entity, LIC's dividend payouts are a consistent part of the government's non-tax revenue collection efforts.
For investors, the primary area to watch remains the company's ability to balance its massive asset growth with the need to maintain profit margins in a competitive life insurance market. While the dividend highlights current profitability, future performance will depend on the insurer's ability to grow its high-margin individual protection business and manage market-linked investments. The next important update for shareholders will be the release of quarterly earnings and any management commentary regarding future business strategy and product mix expansion.
