Karur Vysya Bank Jumps 11% After Q1 Profit Rises 45% YoY

Karur Vysya Bank shares surged 11% to ₹335.50 after reporting a net profit of ₹760 crore for Q1FY27. The rally followed a 30% rise in net interest income and improved asset quality. Other small- and mid-cap banks, including Jana Small Finance Bank and Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, also saw gains as investors reacted to strong sector-wide earnings reports.

Detailed Coverage

Karur Vysya Bank led a rally in small- and mid-cap banking stocks on Tuesday, with shares climbing 11% to reach ₹335.50 on the back of strong quarterly results. The bank reported a profit after tax of ₹760 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, representing a 45% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance was supported by a 30% year-on-year growth in net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits.

Financial Performance and Operational Focus

The bank’s strong quarterly showing was accompanied by a significant increase in trading activity, with nearly 50 million shares changing hands across the NSE and BSE, representing an eighteenfold rise in daily volume. Management reported a net interest margin of 4.26% for the quarter, which surpassed earlier guidance. While the bank reaffirmed its goal of achieving industry-leading growth, it noted a strategic shift toward caution regarding low-yielding corporate loans. Lower slippages, which refer to loans that have turned into non-performing assets, also played a key role in supporting the bottom line.

Broader Sector Movement

Other banks in the mid- and small-cap space also recorded gains, even as the benchmark BSE Sensex traded with a slight decline of 0.3%. Jana Small Finance Bank shares rose 7% to hit a 52-week high of ₹569.65. The bank attributed its 52% year-on-year profit growth to ₹150 crore to reduced credit costs and improved margins. Jana Small Finance Bank has focused on shifting its loan book, with 73.1% of its total advances now consisting of secured loans in segments such as affordable housing, MSME, and gold loans. Tamilnad Mercantile Bank also reached a 52-week high of ₹848, with the stock recording a 65% rise year-to-date in 2026. The bank has been working on strengthening its CASA (Current Account Savings Account) franchise to support its credit expansion strategy.

Risks and Monitoring

While the sector is currently benefiting from improved profitability and asset quality, investors typically monitor the sustainability of these margin levels and loan growth. For Karur Vysya Bank, the key monitorable remains its ability to balance growth in its loan portfolio while maintaining asset quality as it navigates away from certain corporate segments. Similarly, for banks like Jana Small Finance Bank, future updates on loan book diversification and the cost of funds will be important to track as they aim to maintain their current momentum in a competitive banking environment.
