Karnataka Bank reported a 43% jump in net profit to ₹418.95 crore for the first quarter of FY27. The bank’s asset quality improved as gross non-performing assets dropped to 2.58%, supported by a 17% growth in total advances.
Karnataka Bank has reported a strong start to the 2026-27 fiscal year, with its net profit rising to ₹418.95 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. This is a 43.28% increase compared to the ₹292.40 crore reported in the same period last year. The bank also achieved a significant milestone with its aggregate business reaching ₹1,97,006.62 crore.
A key driver of this performance was the growth in interest income. Net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits, rose to ₹938.29 crore from ₹755.60 crore in the previous year. The net interest margin—a measure of profitability from lending—improved to 3.20%, up from 2.82% a year ago. This suggests that the bank was able to earn better returns on its loans relative to its cost of funds.
The bank’s lending activity also expanded, with gross advances increasing by 17% to ₹86,610.21 crore. On the deposit side, total deposits grew by 7% to reach ₹1,10,396.41 crore. The share of low-cost current and savings account (CASA) deposits, which helps banks manage their cost of borrowing, improved to 32.42% from 30.84%.
Improvement in Asset Quality and Capital Strength
For investors, the health of a bank’s loan book is often determined by the level of bad loans. Karnataka Bank saw its gross non-performing assets fall to 2.58% in this quarter, compared to 3.46% in June 2025. Similarly, net non-performing assets decreased to 0.87% from 1.44% in the year-ago period. These numbers reflect a cleaner loan portfolio and more effective recovery processes.
The bank also maintained a solid capital buffer, with its capital-to-risk asset ratio (CRAR) at 21.10% as of June 30, 2026. This ratio measures a bank’s financial strength and its ability to absorb potential losses. A level above 21% is generally considered strong, providing the bank with the necessary cushion to support future loan growth.
Looking ahead, the primary areas for investors to monitor will be the bank's ability to maintain these profit margins and asset quality in a changing interest rate environment. The bank has indicated that it is focusing on digital transformation to improve efficiency, which will be another factor to track in the coming quarters to see how it impacts operational costs.
