K. Rajaraman Gets Extension as IFSCA Chairperson Until 2028

The government has extended K. Rajaraman’s tenure as Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) until October 2028. This move ensures leadership stability for the ongoing development of India's GIFT City financial hub.

The central government has officially extended the tenure of K. Rajaraman as the Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). According to the latest notification, he will continue to lead the regulatory body until October 2028, or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Strategic Focus on GIFT City

The IFSCA is the unified regulator responsible for developing and overseeing financial products, services, and institutions within India’s International Financial Services Centre, primarily located at GIFT City in Gujarat. By extending his term, the government is looking to maintain continuity in the regulatory environment as the authority works to attract more global financial players, fintech companies, and international banks to the hub. Investors in the financial services sector often monitor the IFSCA’s policies, as these regulations directly shape how offshore banking, asset management, and derivative trading activities are conducted within the special economic zone.

Background and Regulatory Role

K. Rajaraman, a 1989-batch retired IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, first took charge as the IFSCA Chairperson in August 2023. Before heading the authority, he served as the Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications. His career includes significant experience in financial policy, having previously worked as Additional Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs and Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure under the Union Ministry of Finance.

His administrative experience is broad, covering infrastructure and tax governance as well. He has served as the Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd and as Commissioner of Commercial Taxes in Tamil Nadu. With this academic and professional background, his role remains central to refining the operational framework of GIFT City.

What Investors Should Monitor

For market participants and financial institutions operating or planning to enter the GIFT City ecosystem, the primary monitorable will be the future regulatory roadmap provided by the IFSCA. As the regulator continues to simplify compliance norms and introduce new financial instruments to compete with global hubs like Dubai or Singapore, the consistency in leadership under Rajaraman may influence the pace of policy implementation. Investors may track upcoming announcements regarding new tax incentives, the easing of capital flow norms, and the expansion of the permitted list of financial products available for trading within the center.
