India's mutual fund industry has reached an unprecedented milestone, with assets under custody (AUC) soaring to Rs 70.9 lakh crore in October. This represents a strong 22 percent year-on-year growth, fueled by both favorable market conditions and a significant influx of retail investors. The pace of expansion has accelerated dramatically, with the industry's asset base nearly doubling in just two years, a stark contrast to the eight years it took to grow from Rs 19.3 lakh crore in 2017 to Rs 39.3 lakh crore in 2023.
Investor participation has surged in tandem, with the number of mutual fund accounts reaching 25.2 crore by September 2025, up from 15.7 crore in 2023. This growth is also marked by a geographical shift: the share of assets from the top five metropolitan cities has decreased from 73% in 2016 to 53% currently. Concurrently, other cities' contribution has risen dramatically to nearly 19%, highlighting a deeper penetration into Tier-II and Tier-III markets. Emerging hubs like Surat, Lucknow, and Jaipur are showing steady gains.
Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) are also demonstrating robust momentum, with monthly inflows hitting a record Rs 29,361 crore in September 2025, a nearly 20% increase from the previous year. Equity-linked assets have been a major driver, growing by 20% year-on-year to Rs 50.9 lakh crore in October 2025. This broad-based growth signifies a structural deepening of India's mutual fund ecosystem, making it a truly pan-India savings instrument.
