Indian Overseas Bank Clears ₹20,000 Crore Loss, Eyes ₹5,000 Crore QIP

Indian Overseas Bank has eliminated ₹20,000 crore in accumulated losses, clearing the path for future dividend payments. The state-owned lender now plans to raise up to ₹5,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement in the latter half of FY27 to strengthen its capital base.

Detailed Coverage

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has achieved a significant financial milestone by wiping out nearly ₹20,000 crore in accumulated losses. This balance sheet recovery follows a difficult period between 2014 and 2020 when the public sector lender consistently recorded losses. By consistently generating net profits over recent years, the bank has successfully cleared these historical red entries, a move that now qualifies the lender to consider dividend payments to its shareholders.

Capital Expansion and Public Shareholding

Building on this improved financial position, the bank has announced plans to raise up to ₹5,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP). This process involves selling shares to institutional investors, such as mutual funds and insurance companies. The board of directors has already provided its approval for the plan, and the bank is currently awaiting necessary regulatory and statutory clearances. The management intends to execute this fundraise during the third or fourth quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, potentially splitting the amount into smaller tranches.

This move is also strategically important for the bank's ownership structure. The central government currently holds a 92.44% stake in the lender. While public sector banks often receive specific exemptions, the government is looking to gradually dilute its majority holding to move closer to the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) requirement for listed companies to maintain a 25% public shareholding.

Recent Financial Momentum

The bank reported strong growth for the June 2026 quarter, with net profit rising by 49.32% compared to the same period last year to reach ₹1,659 crore. Core income from interest operations also showed health, with Net Interest Income growing by 34.3% to ₹3,688 crore. A key driver of this performance has been the expansion of interest margins, with the bank's domestic Net Interest Margin climbing to 3.48% from 3.17% in the previous year. This indicates that the bank is earning better returns on the loans it provides relative to the interest it pays on deposits.

Lending Strategy and Growth Drivers

IOB has focused heavily on retail, agriculture, and MSME lending, which now account for roughly 80% of its total loan portfolio. Retail advances saw a sharp increase of 36.49%, reaching ₹96,637 crore by the end of June 2026. The bank’s gold loan portfolio remains a significant asset, currently valued at approximately ₹1.26 trillion. Management expects this specific segment to continue growing at a rate of 30% to 35% in FY27. Investors will likely track the bank's ability to maintain these margins and manage its asset quality as it expands its loan book and works toward the final execution of the QIP in the coming months.
