Major Indian banks are moving Agentic AI from pilot projects to core operations to improve efficiency in lending and customer service. While the technology offers growth potential, the RBI has warned that banks must maintain strict board-level accountability. Investors should monitor how this increased technology spending affects profit margins and cybersecurity risk management in the coming quarters.
Major Indian banks, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Bank of India, and IndusInd Bank, have signaled a strategic shift toward integrating Agentic AI into their core business. At the FIBAC 2026 conference held in Mumbai today, banking leaders confirmed that AI is moving beyond limited pilot projects to become a central part of their operational strategy. This technology, which is capable of autonomously executing complex tasks and decision-making processes, is being targeted to improve efficiency in lending, compliance, and customer interaction.
RBI Warning on Governance
While the industry is eager to adopt these new tools, the Reserve Bank of India has urged caution. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra emphasized that banks must shape their AI journey with clear board-level accountability. He warned against allowing the technology to shape the sector by default, highlighting the need for human-in-the-loop oversight. The regulator's stance suggests that while innovation is encouraged, governance structures must evolve alongside the technology to prevent systemic failures.
Data Quality and Security Challenges
Banking executives highlighted that the success of Agentic AI depends heavily on the accuracy of the data it is fed. Anjani Rathor, Group Head of Digital Banking & Customer Experience at HDFC Bank, noted that AI intelligence is directly tied to the quality and labeling of training data. He cited the risks of using outdated information, such as old income data, to assess credit risk, which could lead to incorrect decisions. To manage these risks, banks are prioritizing the tokenization of customer data to protect privacy and are calling for more robust transaction monitoring systems.
Investor Monitorables
For investors, the integration of Agentic AI brings both opportunities and risks. The potential benefits include reduced operational costs and faster service, which could improve long-term productivity. However, there are significant risks to track. First, the capital spending required for this transition—including upgrades to data infrastructure and employee reskilling—could put temporary pressure on operating margins. Second, banks face heightened vulnerability to cyber threats and fraud, as sophisticated attacks may outpace traditional defense systems. Third, there is the risk of AI hallucinations or biased credit modeling, which could lead to regulatory scrutiny or financial loss.
The ecosystem is already seeing new solutions emerge, such as the launch of the 'AgenticIQ' platform by L&T Technology Services today, which aims to support these banking needs. The key monitorable for the coming quarters will be how well banks balance this new spending with their profit targets and whether their risk management frameworks can keep pace with the speed of AI adoption.
