India Reaches 99.92% Banking Coverage; RBI Eases Branch Rules

India has achieved banking access for 99.92% of inhabited villages, with over 600,000 locations now served. The Jan Dhan scheme has supported this with 58.77 crore accounts holding ₹3.12 lakh crore. The RBI has also simplified branch opening regulations to further improve financial services penetration in rural areas.

Financial inclusion in India has reached a major milestone, with the Finance Ministry confirming that 99.92% of inhabited villages are now within 5 kilometers of a banking touchpoint. This expansion covers over 600,000 villages, ensuring that a vast majority of the rural population has access to formal banking infrastructure. This network is supported by 1.81 lakh bank branches, 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank centers, and a massive force of 17.36 lakh business correspondents who facilitate doorstep banking.

Jan Dhan Yojana Deposits Reach ₹3.12 Lakh Crore

A primary catalyst for this reach has been the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. As of July 17, 2026, the total number of accounts under this scheme stands at 58.77 crore. These accounts have mobilized significant household savings, with total deposits now crossing ₹3.12 lakh crore. This development is important for banks as it expands their low-cost deposit base, which is crucial for managing the cost of funds and maintaining net interest margins.

RBI Eases Branch Expansion Rules

To build on this progress, the Reserve Bank of India has removed the requirement for prior approval for banks looking to open new branches. This policy change applies to commercial banks, Small Finance Banks, Payments Banks, and Regional Rural Banks. Under the updated framework, banks are free to expand their footprint across the country, provided they meet a specific social obligation: 25% of all new branches must be opened in unbanked rural areas.

Investor Context and Market Impact

For investors, this shift in branch regulation may influence the capital spending plans of mid-sized and regional banks. While the flexibility to expand without prior permission can speed up growth, banks must now balance their expansion strategy with the 25% rural-branch mandate. Investors should track whether the increased operational reach leads to sustainable credit growth and if the cost of managing rural infrastructure impacts overall return ratios for these lenders. The next major monitorable will be the quarterly updates from banks regarding their branch expansion pace and the success of deposit mobilization in these newly served regions.
