IIFL Capital Hires 4 Barclays Bankers to Grow Wealth Unit

IIFL Capital Services has recruited four senior executives from Barclays to accelerate its assets under management. This talent acquisition is part of a plan to capture the growing ultra-high-net-worth market in India. Investors should monitor whether this aggressive hiring translates into sustained AUM growth and efficient integration as the firm competes in a highly crowded wealth management sector.

IIFL Capital Services is ramping up its wealth management division by onboarding four senior private banking veterans from Barclays. This recruitment is a core component of the company's strategy to double its assets under management within the next two years. At the end of the 2026 fiscal year, the firm reported assets under management of ₹60,000 crore, and it is now leveraging the current hiring cycle to capture a larger share of the ultra-high-net-worth market.

Recruiting Four Senior Bankers to Boost Wealth Unit

The four new hires—Neeraj Pandey, Subir Didwania, Kunal Kapadia, and Vivek Makim—are tasked with strengthening the firm's domestic wealth operations and its Global Indian division. This unit is responsible for managing cross-border assets for non-resident Indians and business promoters. The company has already brought on 60 relationship managers and aims to hire 120 more to support its aggressive expansion targets. These goals were set following recent leadership changes, including the appointment of joint CEOs Raghav Gupta and Prakash Bulusu.

Fairfax-Backed Expansion Strategy

This growth plan is supported by significant structural changes, most notably the ownership consolidation by Prem Watsa’s Fairfax Financial Holdings. Earlier this year, the entity became the controlling shareholder of IIFL Capital following a ₹2,000 crore preferential share issue. The firm is now attempting to use this capital and structural stability to pivot toward faster growth. The recruitment strategy also coincides with global banking trends where institutions like Barclays are trimming staff to manage costs. This environment has provided an opportunity for local financial services firms to acquire experienced industry talent during a period of global downsizing.

Managing Growth in Competitive Market

For investors, the primary monitorable will be the company’s ability to integrate these new teams effectively and translate the headcount increase into higher revenue and stable profit margins. The wealth management business relies heavily on advisory and management fees, making the quality of client relationships critical to success. While the hiring spree indicates a push for scale, the long-term viability of this strategy will depend on whether the company can maintain service quality while managing the risks associated with rapid expansion.

Wealth management in India is a highly competitive sector with multiple domestic and global players vying for the same client base. The cost of acquiring and retaining high-quality talent, combined with the pressure to grow, may influence short-term operating margins. Investors will likely watch the next quarterly disclosures to see if these investments begin to reflect in the firm's overall operating performance and AUM trajectory.
