IDFC First Bank Loans Rise 20% in Q2; Deposits Up 17%

IDFC First Bank reported a 20.4% year-on-year growth in core loans to ₹3,13,864 crore for the September 2026 quarter. Deposits grew 17% as the bank improved its CASA ratio to 51.3%. Investors are tracking the bank's strategy of utilizing foreign currency inflows to manage liquidity and reduce dependency on expensive domestic funding.

IDFC First Bank has released its provisional business update for the second quarter ending September 30, 2026, showing steady expansion in its loan and deposit books. Core loans and advances rose 20.4% year-on-year to ₹3,13,864 crore. Total deposits also saw a 17% increase, reaching ₹3,23,697 crore. These figures exclude the leveraged components of its International Banking Unit (IBU), providing a clearer view of the bank's core domestic business performance.

Liquidity Strategy and Funding Mix

The bank is actively managing its funding structure to optimize costs. A key highlight this quarter was the mobilization of ₹34,390 crore in Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR(B)) deposits. This move is part of a strategic shift to replace expensive domestic wholesale funding, such as Certificates of Deposit, with more stable foreign currency inflows. The bank’s Current Account Savings Account (CASA) ratio improved to 51.3%, up from 50.8% in the previous quarter, indicating a higher proportion of low-cost deposits which generally supports the bank's margins.

While the core business shows consistent growth, total gross advances—which include FCNR(B) adjustments and IBU-linked leverage—stood at ₹3,38,749 crore, representing a 29.9% jump from the previous year. For investors, the primary monitorable is how effectively the bank deploys this liquidity surplus. While these inflows support growth, there is a possibility of short-term margin pressure if this capital is not deployed quickly or profitably. Furthermore, investors typically scrutinize the bank’s microfinance (MFI) loan segment, where asset quality can sometimes be volatile and impact overall profitability.

Market Reaction and Upcoming Schedule

IDFC First Bank shares traded around ₹82.20 on October 5, 2026, following the release of these figures. The company’s board is scheduled to meet on October 24, 2026, to finalize and approve the Q2 financial results. In the coming weeks, market participants will likely look for management commentary on the sustainability of this loan growth, how the bank plans to manage net interest margins amid shifting funding costs, and any potential regulatory updates regarding the classification of IBU-leveraged funds.
