IDBI Bank Q2 Profit Falls 39% as One-Off Gain Ends

IDBI Bank’s Q2 net profit dropped 39% to Rs 2,206 crore, mainly due to the absence of a large one-time gain from last year's stake sale. Excluding this, core profits grew 14%. While operational metrics like net interest income and asset quality improved, investors remain focused on the status of the upcoming 60.72% strategic stake sale to Fairfax Financial Holdings.

IDBI Bank reported a 39% year-on-year decline in its net profit for the second quarter, bringing it to Rs 2,206 crore. This headline number was heavily influenced by the high base effect from the same quarter last year, which included a one-time windfall of Rs 1,699 crore from the bank's divestment of its stake in the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). When excluding this non-recurring income, the bank’s core profit actually showed a growth of 14%.

Core Operations and Margin Efficiency

The bank’s underlying business performance showed strength, with net interest income rising by 28.7% to Rs 4,227 crore. This growth reflects the bank’s improved management of interest rate spreads. The net interest margin, which represents the efficiency of interest-earning assets, expanded to 4.11%, a 40 basis point increase compared to the previous year. Operational efficiency also improved, with the cost-to-income ratio declining to 48.17%, suggesting better control over expenses relative to income.

Asset Quality and Balance Sheet Growth

Asset quality continued to improve, with the gross non-performing asset ratio dropping to 2.12% from 2.65% a year ago. The net non-performing asset ratio stood at 0.17%, slightly higher than the previous quarter but lower than the 0.21% reported in the second quarter of the last fiscal year. The bank maintains a conservative risk approach, evidenced by a provision coverage ratio of 99.24%.

On the balance sheet side, the bank saw healthy growth. Total deposits increased by 17% to Rs 3,55,684 crore, while net advances grew by 18% to Rs 2,71,533 crore. The CASA (Current Account Savings Account) ratio remained stable at 43.82%, providing the bank with a steady pool of lower-cost funds.

Strategic Stake Sale

Investors continue to monitor the bank’s strategic transition. The Cabinet has approved the sale of a 60.72% stake to Fairfax Financial Holdings at a price of Rs 81 per share. The bank is well-capitalized to navigate this period, with a capital adequacy ratio of 27.10% and a Tier 1 capital ratio of 26.55%. The primary monitorable for shareholders remains the progress of this stake sale and how the final offer price aligns with the bank’s operational performance and market valuation.
