Q4 Results Spark 'Buy' Upgrade for South Indian Bank
ICICI Securities has upgraded South Indian Bank (SIB) to a 'Buy' rating, raising its target price to ₹56 from ₹53. The move comes after a strong Q4FY26 performance marked by accelerated loan and CASA growth, plus improved asset quality. The bank significantly reduced slippages, gross non-performing assets (GNPAs), and net NPAs. SIB maintained a Return on Assets (RoA) above 1% for the quarter. While treasury performance was weak, it was offset by a rollback in retiral costs, supporting the bank's financial stability. The Common Equity Tier 1 (CET 1) ratio stayed strong at 18.76%.
Growth Focus Positions Bank for Steady Returns
SIB is strategically shifting its loan portfolio towards core Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) and retail segments. This focus is expected to improve Net Interest Margins (NIMs) over the long term. Analysts predict operating expenses (opex) will increase from a low starting point. Nevertheless, RoA is forecast to stay resilient around 1.1%. This stability is expected to come from faster growth, higher NIMs, and sustained good asset quality.
Succession Plan and Valuation Details
The bank's board has started searching for a new MD & CEO, as the current chief is not seeking reappointment. ICICI Securities suggests an internal promotion could ensure continuity in the bank's ongoing transformation. The firm values SIB at an unchanged multiple of about 1x FY28E Adjusted Book Value (ABV), which supports the new target price.
