ICICI Prudential Asset Management clarified that its ₹809.65 billion alternatives AUM counts only invested capital, excluding undrawn commitments. Despite a 6.1% annual profit rise for the September quarter, shares fell 2.01% to ₹2,969.40. Investors are noting that while alternative assets are growing, the company faces challenges from rising expenses and a sequential dip in net profit.
ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (AMC) has provided new clarity on how it reports its alternative investment assets. The firm stated that its reported alternatives assets under management (AUM) of ₹809.65 billion includes only capital that has already been 'drawn' from investors and deployed into areas like private credit and real estate. This distinction is important for investors because it means the company’s disclosed figure is conservative and does not include committed but uninvested capital.
Financial Performance and Expenses
The clarification accompanied the company's financial results for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. ICICI Prudential AMC reported an operating revenue of ₹1,673.79 crore, marking a 16.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Profit after tax (PAT) also saw a year-on-year rise of 6.1%, reaching ₹888.96 crore. The company declared an interim dividend of ₹30 per equity share, which generally signals management's confidence in cash flow.
However, the market reaction was muted, with the stock closing 2.01% lower at ₹2,969.40 on October 12, 2026. This downward movement suggests investors are paying attention to underlying pressures. A key concern for shareholders is the sequential performance, where profit after tax fell by 7.8% compared to the first quarter of the year. This drop was largely driven by mark-to-market losses, or fluctuations in the value of investments, which impacted 'other income.' Additionally, operating expenses grew by 17.9%, a rate that outpaced the company's revenue growth of 16.3%, indicating that cost management will be a key factor to watch in upcoming quarters.
Alternatives Growth and Market Reliance
While the company is scaling its alternative investment segment, traditional mutual fund operations remain the primary driver of revenue, accounting for roughly 89.91% of the total. The alternative segment contributed 8.68% to the operating net revenue during the September quarter. The firm is currently focusing its strategy on private credit and pre-leased office assets, viewing these as scalable institutional products rather than broad infrastructure investments. It is also in the process of integrating the Portfolio Management Services (PMS) business acquired from ICICI Securities, which management expects will broaden its client reach.
The next steps for investors will be to track whether the company can control its rising operating expenses and stabilize 'other income,' which has introduced volatility into quarterly profits. Furthermore, as the firm continues to expand its alternative business, the ability to deploy committed capital efficiently will remain a crucial monitorable for the long-term growth of this segment.
