ICICI Lombard General Insurance reported a 15.5% profit jump in Q2 FY2027 to ₹946.4 crore, driven by strong premium growth. However, the company faced operational challenges as underwriting losses widened and the combined ratio deteriorated to 107%, signaling higher costs.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance posted a net profit of ₹946.4 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal year, a 15.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The company’s growth was supported by a 17.7% rise in net premium earned, which reached ₹6,651.87 crore. Despite these strong top-line numbers, investors are keeping a close watch on the company’s core operational efficiency, which showed signs of strain during the quarter.
While the company continues to see healthy business expansion, particularly in the motor segment where it maintains a 10.3% market share, the cost of generating this business has risen. The combined ratio, a key measure of an insurance company's profitability and underwriting performance, worsened to 107% from 105.1% in the year-ago period. A combined ratio above 100% indicates that the company is spending more on claims and expenses than it is collecting in premiums, meaning its core underwriting business is effectively operating at a loss before accounting for investment income.
Contributing to this pressure, the company’s underwriting losses widened significantly to ₹318.38 crore, up from ₹178 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Operational costs also weighed on the results, with the Management Expenses (EoM) ratio rising to 36.3% from 31.9%. These figures highlight the challenge management faces in balancing aggressive premium growth with cost control in a competitive insurance market.
Despite these operational hurdles, the company’s overall financial position remains stable, evidenced by a healthy solvency ratio of 2.75x, which reflects its ability to meet long-term claim obligations. Recognising the steady earnings performance, the board of directors announced an interim dividend of ₹7 per equity share for shareholders. On the stock market, ICICI Lombard shares closed 1.25% higher at ₹1,713 on October 14, 2026, as investors weighed the profit growth against the operational margin pressures.
For investors, the key area to monitor in the coming quarters will be the company’s ability to manage its expense ratios and stabilize its underwriting performance. Future updates from management regarding claim volatility, especially in the motor and health segments, will be important for assessing whether the company can bring its combined ratio back towards more efficient levels.
