ICICI Lombard Profit Up 27% to ₹1,031 Cr on Investment Gains

ICICI Lombard posted a 27.5% rise in Q2 FY2027 profit, driven by strong investment returns despite challenges in its core insurance business. The company declared an interim dividend of ₹7 per share. While solvency levels remain healthy, investors should note the continued pressure on underwriting margins and premium growth compared to industry averages.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance reported a profit of ₹1,031 crore for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, marking a 27.5 percent increase compared to the ₹809 crore reported in the same period last year. On the day of the announcement, the company’s share price rose by 1.25 percent to close at ₹1,713.

The profit growth was largely supported by a significant rise in investment income, which acted as a cushion against pressure in the company's core insurance business. Investment income climbed to ₹1,554 crore, with capital gains more than doubling compared to the previous year. Following these results, the board approved an interim dividend of ₹7 per share for the first half of the fiscal year, an increase from the ₹6.50 dividend declared in the same period last year.

While the bottom-line profit showed growth, the company’s core underwriting business faced hurdles. The combined ratio, a key metric for an insurer that measures claims and expenses against premium collections, worsened to 104.5 percent from 103.9 percent a year ago. A combined ratio above 100 percent generally means the company is paying out more in claims and operating expenses than it collects in premiums. This increase was driven partly by higher catastrophe-related losses, which totaled ₹118 crore for the quarter, up from ₹73 crore in the year-ago period.

Premium growth also showed a mixed trend. The Gross Direct Premium Income for the first half of the fiscal year grew by 5.4 percent, which trailed the broader industry average of 8.9 percent. This suggests that the insurer is navigating a competitive environment, though it noted stronger growth when excluding volatile categories like crop and mass health insurance.

Despite the underwriting pressure, the insurer maintains a solid capital cushion. The solvency ratio, which indicates the company’s ability to meet its long-term obligations, improved to 2.74 times as of September 30, 2026. This is significantly higher than the regulatory requirement of 1.50 times, providing the firm with financial flexibility.

Going forward, investors may track whether the company can improve its underwriting profitability and gain market share in its core segments. The performance of investment returns will also remain a key monitorable, as this continues to be a major contributor to the company’s overall profit growth in a competitive insurance sector.
