ICICI Bank reported a 16% rise in net profit to ₹14,805 crore for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, driven by strong loan demand and improved interest margins. The bank’s performance stands out as it managed to expand margins while many industry peers faced pressure. Investors may now track deposit growth and the impact of the bank’s strategy to attract cost-effective foreign currency deposits.
ICICI Bank has announced a solid start to the new fiscal year, reporting a 16 percent year-on-year growth in net profit for the quarter ending June 30, 2026. The lender’s net profit reached ₹14,805 crore, supported by a healthy expansion in its loan book and disciplined management of credit costs.
Loan Growth and Margin Trends
The bank reported a 20 percent year-on-year increase in its total loan portfolio. A key highlight was the performance of its business banking and rural segments, which grew by 28 percent and 35 percent, respectively. Unlike several other lenders currently facing pressure on net interest margins—the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits—ICICI Bank managed a sequential margin expansion. Its domestic net interest margin climbed to 4.45 percent, an improvement of 4 basis points over the previous quarter.
To support ongoing lending activities, the bank is actively focusing on Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits. Management aims to use these deposits as a cost-effective source of funding, which could help maintain loan growth momentum in a competitive banking environment where overall deposit growth remains a challenge for the broader sector.
Asset Quality and Provisions
Asset quality indicators remained stable during the quarter, with lower slippages and consistent recoveries. Consequently, the bank reduced its provisions by 31 percent compared to the same period last year. With credit costs contained at 32 basis points, the bank continues to maintain a defensive position through its balance sheet strength. Specifically, it holds contingent provisions totaling ₹13,100 crore, which provide a buffer against potential future economic uncertainty or unexpected stress in the loan portfolio.
Financial Position and Market Context
Trading at approximately 1.9 times its estimated FY28 core book value, the stock continues to be evaluated by investors based on its return ratios. In this quarter, the bank achieved a return on assets of 2.49 percent. While the bank’s operational efficiency has been a consistent theme, investors often monitor how the lender balances aggressive loan growth with the slower pace of deposit gathering across the banking industry. The ability to source stable, low-cost funds will be a critical factor for the bank to sustain its current margin profile in upcoming quarters. Tracking the bank's progress in deposit mobilization and the actual utilization of its loan capacity will provide clearer insights into the sustainability of this growth trajectory.
