HDFC Bank Rises 1.6% Ahead of Q2 Results on Oct 17

HDFC Bank shares climbed 1.6% to ₹722.10 on Thursday as trading volumes spiked before the second-quarter results scheduled for Saturday, October 17. The market is closely monitoring profitability metrics, particularly net interest margins and credit costs, as the bank navigates a changing interest rate environment.

HDFC Bank share prices rose 1.6% to reach ₹722.10 on the National Stock Exchange during Thursday's trading session. This movement comes just two days ahead of the bank’s scheduled second-quarter earnings report on Saturday, October 17. The stock has seen a recovery of 4.31% over the past week, tracking a 3.28% gain in the Bank Nifty index.

Trading activity was notably high, with volumes hitting 202.96 lakh units, which is more than double the volume seen in the previous session. While the price moved upward, the trading data also showed a significant sell-side presence. Approximately 66.35% of the total traded volume was recorded on the sell side, suggesting that some investors may be choosing to book profits or reduce their exposure ahead of the results announcement.

The current focus for the market is on the bank's operational performance, specifically net interest margins—the gap between the interest earned on loans and the interest paid on deposits. Investors are also watching credit costs, which is the money a bank sets aside to cover potential loan losses. These figures will provide a clear picture of how the current interest rate environment is impacting the bank’s business and profitability.

Despite the recent short-term price increase, the broader performance of the stock remains under pressure. The bank has seen a year-to-date decline of 27.15%. The stock is currently trading above its 52-week low of ₹681.90, which was recorded in September. The key monitorables for shareholders following Saturday's financial disclosure will be management's commentary on loan demand, asset quality, and the strategy to manage profit margins amid ongoing adjustments in interest rates.
