Authorities in Gorakhpur have arrested a railway station superintendent and his daughter for allegedly orchestrating a Rs 1.67 crore loan fraud. The duo reportedly misled victims, including colleagues, into securing personal loans under false promises, only to default on payments. This incident highlights the significant financial and credit risks individuals face when sharing sensitive financial documents with third parties.
A railway station superintendent and his daughter have been arrested in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, following allegations of orchestrating a personal loan fraud scheme totaling over Rs 1.67 crore. Police apprehended Dhruv Narayan Singh, a station superintendent at Sahjanwa railway station, along with his daughter, Garima Singh, as investigations into the alleged scam continue.
The investigation, led by the AIIMS police station, centers on a deceptive method used to exploit individuals, including fellow railway employees. According to the initial police findings, Garima Singh allegedly targeted victims by offering to help them settle existing car loans. The scheme involved persuading these individuals to take out fresh personal loans, which she claimed would be transferred to her to handle the monthly repayments. Once the victims shared their documents and the loan amounts were credited, the accused allegedly failed to meet the promised repayment obligations.
The fraud reportedly involved multiple financial institutions, including HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, YES Bank, ICICI Bank, SMFG, and Bandhan Bank. Victims began to face the consequences of the default when banks initiated collection processes for the unpaid installments. A formal complaint was registered by another railway station superintendent, Satya Prakash Singh, after his attempt to resolve the issue directly with the accused proved unsuccessful.
During the search, authorities recovered a personal diary belonging to Garima Singh, which allegedly contained entries reflecting aspirations for immense wealth. Police officials, including City Superintendent of Police Nimesh Patil, have confirmed that the investigation is widening to identify additional victims and potential accomplices who may have been involved in the operation. The accused are currently in custody as the case proceeds.
For the victims involved, the incident serves as a severe warning regarding personal financial security. Beyond the immediate loss of funds, those who were misled now face the burden of the defaulted loans, which can significantly damage their credit scores, restrict their access to future credit, and lead to ongoing legal and financial liabilities. The case underscores the critical importance of keeping sensitive financial documents, such as income proofs, bank statements, and identity documents, private. Financial experts advise that individuals should never entrust loan management or repayment processes to third parties, regardless of their professional standing or personal relationship, as the legal liability for any loan remains entirely with the borrower named on the agreement.
