Muthoot Finance announced a remarkable 87.5% increase in standalone profit for the second quarter of FY26, with profits climbing to ₹2,345.17 crore from ₹1,251.14 crore in the same period last year. This substantial growth was primarily attributed to robust demand for gold loans, spurred by gold prices touching record highs which increased the value of collateral. Consequently, borrowers were able to secure larger loans. The company's interest income saw a significant rise of approximately 55%, reaching ₹6,304.36 crore.
Adding to the growth drivers, tighter credit conditions in the unsecured lending sector pushed more individuals towards gold loans for reliable funding. Muthoot Finance's loan assets under management (AUM) expanded by 47% year-on-year to ₹1.32 trillion as of September. The company has revised its FY26 gold loan growth guidance upwards to 30%-35%, from a previous estimate of 15%. Managing Director George Alexander Muthoot highlighted favorable RBI regulations for the gold loan sector, higher gold prices, and stricter unsecured credit norms as key boosters for demand.
Furthermore, the company's asset quality improved, with gross stage three loans (loans overdue by over 90 days) falling to 2.25% of total loans from 2.58% in the prior quarter. The share price of Muthoot Finance ended 2% higher on the day of the announcement and has already climbed 59% year-to-date in 2025.
Impact: This news is highly significant for the Indian stock market, particularly for financial services companies and investors in the gold loan sector. The strong performance of a major player like Muthoot Finance reflects positive market conditions for gold-backed lending and can influence investor sentiment towards similar entities, potentially leading to increased trading activity and portfolio adjustments. Rating: 8/10.
