Federal Bank Q2 Profit Rises 45% to ₹1,386 Cr, Assets Strengthen

Federal Bank reported its highest-ever quarterly profit for the period ending September 2026, supported by higher interest and fee income. The lender saw net interest margins expand to 3.32% while bad loans dropped to a decade-low. Investors are now tracking the bank's deposit growth strategy amidst a competitive banking environment.

Federal Bank reported a strong financial performance for the second quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, with its net profit rising 45% to reach ₹1,386 crore. This growth was driven by a rise in core banking income and a notable improvement in how the bank manages its loans and deposits.

The bank's Net Interest Income, which is the difference between interest earned from loans and interest paid on deposits, grew by over 26% to ₹3,153 crore. A key highlight for the quarter was the expansion of net interest margins to 3.32%. This indicates the bank is effectively managing its cost of funds, as evidenced by a 39-basis-point drop in the cost of deposits. Essentially, the bank is paying less to attract customer deposits while earning more from its lending activities.

Asset Quality and Operational Efficiency

One of the most critical metrics for any lender is asset quality, which measures the health of its loan book. Federal Bank reported its strongest asset quality numbers in a decade. Gross Non-Performing Assets (NPA), representing the total bad loans, fell to 1.32%. More importantly, Net NPA, which shows loans that are likely unrecoverable, reached a record low of 0.17%.

The bank also improved its operational efficiency, with the cost-to-income ratio tightening to 52.08%. This suggests the bank is managing its expenses better relative to the income it generates. Additionally, the Provision Coverage Ratio—a safety buffer for potential bad loans—strengthened, indicating a more cautious and prepared balance sheet.

Growth and Future Outlook

Under the leadership of MD and CEO KVS Manian, the bank has focused on diversifying its revenue streams. Fee income saw a sharp rise of nearly 32%, helping boost the overall bottom line. The bank added 12 new branches during the quarter, taking its network to 1,662, which aligns with its goal of deepening its reach in key markets.

However, investors will continue to monitor the broader banking environment. The sector is currently facing intense competition for retail deposits, which can impact growth and margins for lenders. While Federal Bank’s deposit base grew by 18.61% during the quarter, maintaining this momentum in a tight liquidity environment will be a key factor. Furthermore, the bank’s future performance will depend on its ability to sustain these margins and grow its loan book while keeping its asset quality in check amidst any shifts in the economic cycle.
