Federal Bank Ordered to Reverse Rs 3.25 Lakh Error by Karnataka HC

The Karnataka High Court has directed Federal Bank to refund Rs 3.25 lakh to a customer following an accidental transfer to a dormant account. The court order settles a long-standing dispute caused by a simple digit mismatch. Investors are monitoring this alongside the bank's upcoming board meeting on September 17 to discuss a $500 million debt programme.

The Karnataka High Court has passed an order requiring Federal Bank to reverse a transfer of Rs 3.25 lakh that was erroneously sent by a customer to a dormant account. The case originated from a transaction error in December 2025, where the sender, Nujaiba Jaleel, inadvertently transposed the final four digits of the intended account number. This mistake resulted in the funds being deposited into an account held by a firm identified as M/s Standard Engineering Works.

Operational Challenges in Banking Compliance

The dispute gained attention because the destination account was classified as dormant and potentially linked to other compliance matters, making a simple reversal difficult for the bank. Federal Bank had maintained during proceedings that it could not unilaterally reverse the funds without the account holder's consent or a formal legal directive, citing the need to follow strict regulatory protocols regarding frozen or inactive accounts. The court eventually cleared the path for the refund, ruling that the bank must execute the reversal within three days of receiving the order.

For investors, this case highlights the operational friction banks face when managing customer errors alongside regulatory compliance for dormant or suspicious accounts. While the amount involved is not financially material to the bank's overall balance sheet, it underscores the importance of operational risk management in digital banking systems.

Financial Context and Market Reaction

Federal Bank's stock was trading at approximately Rs 340.35 on September 15, 2026, reflecting a decline of about 1.18% during the trading session. From a broader financial perspective, the bank has maintained stable asset quality, with a Gross Non-Performing Asset (GNPA) ratio of 1.52% and a Net Non-Performing Asset (NNPA) ratio of 0.18% as of the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. These figures suggest that while the bank deals with day-to-day operational issues, its core asset quality remains consistent.

Investors are now looking ahead to the bank's next strategic move. The company has scheduled a board meeting on September 17, 2026. The key monitorable for this meeting is the proposal to discuss a $500 million medium-term note programme, which will determine the bank's funding strategy and cost of capital in the coming quarters. Market participants will likely track how the bank manages its capital and continues its growth trajectory amid these administrative and capital-raising events.
