EbixCash Gets RBI License for Trade Remittances Up to ₹25 Lakh

The Reserve Bank of India has granted EbixCash World Money a perpetual Authorised Dealer Category-II license. This allows the company to process trade-related remittances of up to ₹25 lakh per transaction, helping it compete directly with banks in serving MSME exporters and importers.

Detailed Coverage

EbixCash World Money has secured a perpetual Authorised Dealer Category-II license from the Reserve Bank of India, a development that significantly broadens the company's scope in the foreign exchange market. This regulatory approval allows the entity to handle trade remittances and family maintenance payments, moving it beyond its traditional service offerings. Under the updated Foreign Exchange Management Act guidelines effective May 2026, the company can now process trade transactions of up to ₹25 lakh each.

Access to Trade Remittance Market

The license allows EbixCash to tap into a market segment previously dominated by commercial banks. By enabling MSMEs to conduct international trade payments through its network, the company aims to simplify cross-border transactions for smaller businesses. Additionally, the RBI has permitted the firm to maintain Nostro accounts, which are foreign currency accounts held by a bank in another bank. This authorization allows EbixCash to settle international transactions directly, bypassing the need for intermediary correspondent banks, which can often reduce processing time and costs.

Infrastructure and Regulatory Context

EbixCash operates an extensive network including over 100 branches across 70 cities and several airport counters, alongside a wider footprint of more than 25,000 service touchpoints. The company already holds a substantial share in the Indian cash-to-cash inward remittance market and manages outward remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. Company leadership noted that this perpetual license is the result of long-term adherence to regulatory frameworks. For investors, the move represents a shift toward higher-value financial services, as the company transitions from being a currency provider to a more integrated player in cross-border trade finance.

Investor Monitorables

The primary focus for investors will be how effectively the company can scale its trade remittance business. Key aspects to monitor include the adoption rate among MSME clients who may be accustomed to traditional banking channels and the impact of this new service line on the company's overall transaction volumes and fee-based revenue. Because this move involves handling higher-value trade transactions compared to simple currency exchange, maintaining strict compliance and risk management will remain essential for sustaining this license and expanding further into the trade finance sector.
