ESAF Small Finance Bank Reports ₹80 Crore Profit in Q1 FY27

ESAF Small Finance Bank posted a profit of ₹80 crore for the first quarter of FY27, supported by a total business of ₹51,140 crore. The bank’s asset quality improved significantly, with Gross NPA dropping to 5.4%. Investors may monitor the bank's progress in balancing its loan portfolio between secured and unsecured lending segments.

ESAF Small Finance Bank has reported a profit after tax of ₹80 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2026. This performance marks a notable change in the bank's financial trajectory compared to the previous year. The bank’s total business grew to ₹51,140 crore, driven largely by an increased focus on secured lending and growth in retail deposits.

Portfolio Shift and Cost Management

Management highlighted that the recent results are a reflection of a broader shift toward a more diversified and secured portfolio. Gross advances for the bank reached ₹23,216 crore by the end of June. Of this, secured advances accounted for ₹14,465 crore, while the remaining ₹8,751 crore comprised the unsecured loan book. A key area of growth was the bank’s micro-banking (MARG) portfolio, which grew by 42% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the bank's cost of funds improved, falling to 7.1% from 7.4% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. This improvement in borrowing costs is a critical factor for small finance banks, as it directly impacts net interest margins.

Asset Quality and Deposit Trends

One of the most important takeaways from the Q1 results is the improvement in asset quality. The bank reported its Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) at 5.4% and Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) at 0.8%. This is a significant improvement from the 7.5% GNPA and 3.8% NNPA reported in the same period last year. For investors, the ability of a small finance bank to reduce its bad loans—often referred to as net non-performing assets—is a key monitorable to ensure long-term stability. The bank also maintained a credit-to-deposit ratio of 82.3%, with total deposits reaching ₹26,924 crore. Within these deposits, the Current Account Savings Account (CASA) portion, which is typically a cheaper source of funding for banks, stood at ₹6,297 crore.

Future Execution and Monitoring

While the turnaround in profit and asset quality is positive, the bank faces the inherent challenge of maintaining this momentum in a competitive banking environment. Small finance banks often operate with higher exposure to MSME and micro-borrowers, which makes them sensitive to economic cycles. Future investor interest will likely focus on whether the bank can continue to scale its secured loan book without compromising its asset quality. Additionally, the bank's ability to further increase its CASA ratio will be an important metric to watch, as it directly influences the bank's margin profile and profitability in coming quarters.
