The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced WhatsApp-based services for subscribers to easily check balances and download passbooks. On its 74th Foundation Day, the organization also announced the automatic settlement of inoperative accounts with balances under ₹1,000, aiming to return approximately ₹5 crore to about one lakh members.
On the occasion of its 74th Foundation Day, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) unveiled two significant digital initiatives aimed at simplifying service delivery for its members. Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, launched these services to reduce the reliance on physical office visits and to accelerate the processing of retirement savings claims.
Subscribers can now use WhatsApp to instantly check their provident fund (PF) balance, view their last five transactions, and download their passbooks. This integration is designed to provide a more intuitive interface for the organization's members, allowing them to manage their retirement corpus and access account details without needing to navigate more complex web portals. This move is part of a larger push by the body to modernize its systems as it enters its 75th year of operation.
Alongside the new digital interface, the EPFO has introduced an automated settlement mechanism for inoperative accounts. This initiative specifically targets dormant accounts that hold a balance of less than ₹1,000. By leveraging Aadhaar-verified data, the EPFO aims to settle these small, stagnant balances automatically. This process is expected to benefit approximately one lakh subscribers, effectively releasing ₹5 crore in funds that were previously difficult for account holders to reclaim due to administrative hurdles.
As the EPFO currently manages a massive retirement corpus of roughly ₹32 lakh crore, these technological updates reflect an attempt to increase institutional efficiency. The shift is intended to reduce the administrative burden on regional offices while improving the speed at which long-term savings reach the contributors.
For members using these new digital channels, the primary monitorable will be the security of personal data. As government services move toward third-party platforms like WhatsApp, ensuring that sensitive financial information remains protected is a critical operational priority. Subscribers should ensure they interact only with verified, official handles to avoid data risks. The success of the automated settlement initiative will also depend on the accuracy of Aadhaar-linked records, as any mismatch could lead to processing delays. The EPFO is expected to continue focusing on reducing the processing time for claims as it scales its digital capacity to serve its growing contributor base.
