DBS Bank is launching a dedicated wealth management drive in India to cater to the country's rising number of affluent customers. The lender plans to focus on investment and insurance products while utilizing its GIFT City facility to bridge domestic and international offerings. This strategy marks a pivot toward fee-based income after the bank's 2020 integration of the former Lakshmi Vilas Bank.
DBS Bank is recalibrating its Indian business model by placing wealth management at the center of its growth strategy. Shee Tse Koon, the group head of consumer banking and wealth management, has identified India as a key market alongside China and Indonesia. The bank aims to move beyond standard retail banking by focusing specifically on the needs of affluent individuals, offering a curated suite of investment and insurance products.
Leveraging the Lakshmi Vilas Bank Footprint
This expansion follows a period of significant structural changes for the bank. In November 2020, DBS Bank India completed the merger of the struggling Lakshmi Vilas Bank, which provided the lender with an immediate and widespread physical branch network across the country. This acquisition was a major turning point, allowing DBS to scale its deposit base and lending operations rapidly. Now that the branch network is established, management is looking to extract more value from this footprint by offering high-margin advisory services, rather than relying solely on traditional banking products like savings accounts and loans.
Navigating Regulatory Hurdles
Expanding into wealth management in India is a complex task due to the country's regulatory structure. Unlike some Southeast Asian markets where financial regulations are more unified, India requires managing compliance across multiple bodies, including the Reserve Bank of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority. To manage this, DBS is adopting a targeted approach. Instead of offering a broad spectrum of products that would require complex, multi-layered regulatory approvals, the bank is focusing on select investment and insurance offerings that align with its existing operational structure.
The Role of GIFT City
Part of the bank’s strategy involves optimizing its branch in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, or GIFT City. This facility acts as an international financial services center and is increasingly used by domestic lenders to offer specialized services. DBS is exploring ways to use this facility to create new financial structures that can serve both domestic clients and non-resident Indians. By bridging these two groups, the bank hopes to capture a larger share of the wealth management market.
Investors should note that the Indian wealth management sector is highly competitive. DBS will be competing against entrenched domestic players such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, as well as specialized firms like 360 ONE. The success of this strategy will depend on the bank’s ability to differentiate its service quality and successfully attract affluent clients who already have deep-rooted relationships with other established lenders. The key monitorable for the coming quarters will be the bank's ability to maintain profit margins while investing in these new wealth management capabilities and navigating the evolving regulatory environment.
