Cholamandalam Investment and Finance reported a 41% jump in Q2 FY27 net profit to ₹1,630 crore, fueled by a 47% increase in loan disbursements. The lender has also approved a ₹5,000 crore capital raise via a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) to support its ongoing expansion and strengthen its balance sheet.
Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, a prominent non-banking financial company under the Murugappa Group, reported strong financial growth for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2027. The company announced a 41% surge in net profit, reaching ₹1,630 crore. This performance was supported by a 47% increase in total loan disbursements, signaling robust demand across the segments it serves.
The lender's total assets under management reached ₹2,68,009 crore, reflecting a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. While vehicle finance remains the primary revenue driver, contributing ₹1,29,787 crore to the total asset base, the company is actively diversifying its portfolio. This shift is evident in the performance of its small and medium enterprise (SME) lending segment, which recorded a 45% growth. Additionally, the company is scaling its gold loan business, now operating 308 dedicated branches with a loan book of ₹3,446 crore as of September 30.
Asset Quality and Capital Strategy
For investors, asset quality remains a critical metric to monitor in the non-banking financial sector. Cholamandalam showed slight improvement in this area, with gross non-performing assets (GNPA) falling to 4.44% from 4.50% in the previous quarter. The net non-performing assets also saw a corresponding dip to 2.92%. This stability in asset quality, combined with the company's growth, appeared to satisfy market expectations, as the stock price rose by 5.2% to ₹1,553.85 during the trading session.
The board’s approval for a ₹5,000 crore capital raise through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) is a strategic move to prepare for future growth. In the financial sector, maintaining adequate capital buffers is essential as a company expands its lending operations. By increasing its capital base, Cholamandalam intends to sustain its growth cycle and handle potential credit demand more effectively. However, investors often watch the impact of such fundraising on equity dilution.
The company’s future performance will depend on its ability to maintain these asset quality standards while scaling up its newer business segments like SME and gold loans. The key monitorable for the next few quarters will be the execution of the capital raise, the cost of funds in a changing interest rate environment, and whether the company can continue to manage its non-performing assets as its total loan book grows. Investors may also look for updates on the specific timeline for the QIP and its impact on the company's capital adequacy ratios in the coming regulatory filings.
