Carnelian Asset Management Increases Pharma Bets to 26%

Carnelian Asset Management has raised its pharmaceutical sector holdings to 26% across its major funds. This shift replaces previous bets in engineering and power, driven by rising confidence in contract manufacturing. Investors are now monitoring how this concentrated sector exposure performs alongside upcoming quarterly earnings reports.

Detailed Coverage

Carnelian Asset Management has signaled a major portfolio reshuffle, positioning the pharmaceutical and contract manufacturing (CDMO) sector as its primary investment theme. Recent filings reveal that this shift is occurring across the firm’s three core strategies, which typically follow distinct mandates of quality growth, structural themes, and value-based investing.

Scaling Pharma in Shift and Compounder Funds

The Shift Strategy, which manages assets worth $1.9 billion, has significantly increased its allocation to pharmaceutical and CDMO companies. Between April 2025 and July 2026, the sector's weight in this portfolio rose from 20.2% to 26.0%. This growth has made pharma the largest sector holding for the fund, displacing the engineering and capital goods space. Simultaneously, the flagship Compounder Strategy has maintained a similar conviction, with pharma holdings reaching 26.0% as of July 2026, up from 25.0% just one month prior.

Sector Rotation and the Contra Fund Pivot

The most notable change is seen in the Contra Strategy, which previously focused on traditional sectors like banking, oil, and power. In a clear sign of sectoral rotation, the fund has moved away from power—which held a 16.3% stake in April 2025—to build an 11.1% position in pharma and CDMO stocks by July 2026. This move comes amid a challenging period for the power sector, characterized by stagnant performance in stocks like CESC and significant net losses reported by companies such as Hindustan Petroleum for the June 2026 quarter.

Focus on Laurus Labs and CDMO Momentum

A central component of this strategy appears to be Laurus Labs, which has become a significant holding for the firm. The company recently saw its stock price climb to a record high of ₹1,530.30, supported by a 53% rally during the April-June 2026 quarter. Financial reports indicate that the company’s CDMO business has reached a milestone, now contributing over 30% of total revenue. As this segment involves high-value research and manufacturing services, it is often seen as a driver for improved profit margins compared to traditional bulk drug manufacturing.

Investor Monitorables

For investors tracking these moves, the key concern is the risk associated with sector concentration. While the move towards CDMO companies aims to capture higher-value growth, it ties the performance of these funds closely to the drug manufacturing cycle and export demand. Investors should track upcoming quarterly results to verify if the margin expansion driven by the CDMO business remains sustainable. Additionally, the ability of these pharma companies to maintain high growth rates against global pricing pressures will be a critical factor to watch in the coming quarters.
