Canara Bank Targets ₹50,000 Crore Corporate Loan Growth

Canara Bank plans to expand its corporate loan pipeline by ₹50,000 crore this fiscal year, focusing on green energy, data centers, and infrastructure. The bank is also working to lower funding costs by increasing its CASA ratio and securing $3.5 billion in overseas funds.

Canara Bank has announced a strategic move to scale its corporate loan book by ₹50,000 crore in the current fiscal year. Managing Director and CEO Brajesh Kumar Singh noted that this growth target is supported by rising credit demand from capital-intensive areas such as green energy, infrastructure projects, and data centers. This push is intended to rebalance the bank's lending portfolio, which historically maintains a mix of both corporate and retail advances.

To support this lending expansion, the bank is prioritizing an improvement in its Current Account Savings Account (CASA) ratio, which recently stood at 29.7 percent. A higher CASA ratio is a key metric for banks as it represents low-cost deposits, which help in reducing the overall interest expense on funds. By actively replacing expensive bulk deposits with retail deposits and improving its CASA mix, the bank aims to protect its net interest margins against competitive pressure in the banking sector.

Beyond domestic operations, Canara Bank is looking to international markets to diversify its funding base and manage the cost of liabilities. The management has outlined a plan to mobilize roughly $2.5 billion via Foreign Currency Non-Resident or FCNR-B deposits, with a significant portion already completed. An additional $1 billion is targeted through external commercial borrowings and other overseas financial channels. These international inflows are designed to improve liquidity buffers and provide a more stable funding profile for its corporate lending activities.

While the bank seeks to scale its business, the overall sector continues to face challenges related to interest rate volatility and the need for prudent risk management in corporate lending. Investors often monitor how effectively large public sector banks balance rapid credit growth with asset quality. Additionally, the bank's effort to improve operational efficiency through employee training is an ongoing internal priority to help the organization compete more effectively in the evolving digital banking space.

The next important updates for investors to track will include the bank's quarterly progress on loan disbursement targets, the actual trend in its CASA ratio, and the success of its overseas funding mobilization efforts in lowering the total cost of funds. Monitoring these metrics will help determine if the bank can maintain its profitability margins while aggressively expanding its corporate loan pipeline.
