Canara Bank Q1 FY27 Margin Stable at 2.52% Amid Loan Growth

Canara Bank reported steady net interest margins of 2.52% for the quarter, supported by a 5% sequential growth in total advances. The bank is focusing on improving its liability franchise by shifting toward retail deposits to manage costs. Investors are tracking how this strategy impacts future profitability and margin expansion.

Detailed Coverage

Canara Bank’s latest financial performance highlights a focus on balance sheet stability as the institution navigates competitive interest rate conditions. The bank recorded net interest margins (NIMs) at 2.52% for the quarter, a level it managed to maintain despite broader sector-wide pressure on margins. To support this, the bank is actively refining its funding mix by moving away from expensive bulk deposits and prioritizing growth in retail CASA (current account and savings account) and retail term deposits. This strategic transition is intended to lower the overall cost of funds, which management expects will provide a benefit of 20 to 30 basis points on incremental deposits in the coming quarters.

The bank’s asset growth remains anchored in retail and MSME segments. Total advances grew by 5% on a quarter-on-quarter basis. Specifically, the retail segment expanded by 36% year-on-year and 7% quarter-on-quarter, while the MSME sector grew 15% year-on-year and 7% sequentially. Corporate lending also contributed to the growth, with a 4% increase. This lending mix is a critical monitorable, as these segments often carry different risk-reward profiles compared to large-scale corporate infrastructure loans.

Asset quality metrics improved during the period, reflecting better recovery efforts and tighter credit screening. Slippages moderated to 58 basis points from 94 basis points in the previous quarter. Consequently, the bank reported a Gross Non-Performing Asset (GNPA) ratio of 1.6% and a Net Non-Performing Asset (NNPA) ratio of 0.4%. Sustained improvements in asset quality and healthy fee-based income, partly supported by income from the trading of Priority Sector Lending Certificates (PSLC), have been core contributors to the bank's profitability metrics.

While the bank has shown resilience, the management remains cautious regarding near-term margin trends, projecting them to stay flat as the industry deals with a higher interest rate environment. The ability of the bank to successfully execute its liability-side strategy will be the primary focus for stakeholders. Investors may continue to monitor the progress in the CASA ratio and the sustainability of loan growth in the retail and MSME categories, as these will likely be the key drivers for maintaining the targeted Return on Assets (RoA) of around 1% for the fiscal year 2027.
