CEO Succession Cycles Face 9 Major Indian Banks Through 2028

A Jefferies report highlights that nine leading private banks and financial companies will face CEO term renewals or leadership changes through 2028. Investors often view management stability as a indicator of long-term strategy. With the earliest deadlines at HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank in 2026, clear leadership timelines are becoming an important factor for investor confidence alongside expected growth in sector earnings.

The Indian private banking sector is moving into a period of concentrated leadership transition. A recent report indicates that nine major financial institutions will manage CEO term expiries, renewals, or potential leadership changes over the next two years. For shareholders, this succession cycle is significant because it directly impacts strategic direction, risk management, and capital allocation.

Upcoming leadership timelines

The immediate focus for the market is on the 2026 calendar, as the largest private lenders face upcoming deadlines. HDFC Bank’s managing director and CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, is set to complete his term on October 26, 2026. Shortly after, Kotak Mahindra Bank’s CEO, Ashok Vaswani, will see his term conclude on December 31, 2026.

The cycle intensifies in 2027 with four major institutions reaching transition points. Federal Bank CEO KVS Manian’s term ends on September 22, followed by Bandhan Bank’s CEO Partha Pratim Sengupta on October 31, and IDFC First Bank CEO V Vaidyanathan on December 18. Axis Bank CEO Amitabh Chaudhry’s term is also scheduled to expire on December 31, 2027.

Looking into 2028, further leadership decisions are expected at other major financial players. Bajaj Finance CEO Rajeev Jain reaches the end of his term on March 31, 2028. This is followed by IndusInd Bank CEO Rajiv Anand on August 24, and ICICI Bank CEO Sandeep Bakshi on October 3, 2028.

Earnings and investor confidence

Leadership clarity is becoming more than just a matter of internal governance. Market analysts view established succession timelines as a key catalyst for investor sentiment, especially when paired with an expected recovery in financial sector earnings. While the sector has faced pressure from falling interest rates affecting profit margins and concerns regarding asset quality, projections suggest earnings per share growth could improve.

Estimates indicate that earnings growth for Indian financial companies may pick up from 7% in fiscal year 2026 to 14% by fiscal year 2028. Foreign investors, who often prioritize leadership continuity at institutions where strategy is closely linked to the management team, may monitor these renewals closely.

For investors, the next important development will be the announcements or confirmations regarding leadership renewals at HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, as these will likely set the tone for how the market perceives the broader sector transition. Monitoring these outcomes, alongside quarterly updates on profit margins and loan quality, will be essential for tracking the financial health of these institutions.
