Bank of Baroda Faces $15 Billion Lawsuit from BR Shetty

NMC Healthcare founder Dr. BR Shetty has filed a $15 billion lawsuit against Bank of Baroda in the Bombay High Court. The suit alleges the bank played a role in the financial irregularities linked to the 2020 collapse of his business group, adding to the ongoing legal and reputational risks for the lender.

Dr. BR Shetty, the founder of NMC Healthcare, has initiated a $15 billion lawsuit against Bank of Baroda in the Bombay High Court. The legal action alleges that the bank acted as a central mechanism for systemic fund siphoning that led to the collapse of the NMC and UAE Exchange groups in 2020. The lawsuit names the bank and 25 other defendants, claiming that the lender enabled illicit activities, ignored internal anti-money laundering alerts, and processed transactions based on forged loan guarantees.

This legal challenge brings fresh attention to the bank’s history with the NMC Healthcare insolvency. In July 2026, Bank of Baroda reached a $600 million out-of-court settlement with the joint administrators of NMC Health to resolve separate cross-border litigation regarding similar claims of fraud and regulatory failure. Notably, that previous settlement did not include any formal admission of liability or wrongdoing by the bank.

Legal Context and Previous Challenges

The current lawsuit follows a series of international legal battles. In July 2024, Dr. Shetty’s previous attempts to pursue similar claims against the bank in the New York Supreme Court were dismissed on the grounds of forum non conveniens, a legal principle allowing a court to decline jurisdiction if it believes the case is more appropriately heard in another location. By filing this new suit in the Bombay High Court, the plaintiff is seeking to re-litigate the matter within the Indian legal system, asking for $5 billion in direct damages, $5 billion in consequential damages, and a further $5 billion for reputational loss.

Investor Perspective

For investors, this development introduces renewed legal and reputational uncertainty. While Bank of Baroda previously resolved the NMC-related claims through a settlement earlier in 2026, this new, high-value personal lawsuit indicates that the legal issues surrounding the 2020 corporate collapse may not be fully behind the lender.

Past disclosures of such litigation have historically caused volatility in the bank’s stock price. Investors may continue to track the progress of the court proceedings, the bank's legal defense, and any potential implications for legal provisions or reputation. The key monitorable will be how the court handles these allegations and whether this lawsuit impacts the bank’s focus on its core operations or its existing recovery processes.
