Axis Bank Shares Dip 5% Despite Rs 7,114 Crore Q1 Profit

Axis Bank shares fell 5% on Monday as investors weighed a strong first-quarter profit of Rs 7,114 crore against concerns over lending margins. While the bank reported improved asset quality, analysts pointed to a shift toward corporate loans and margin pressure as key factors for the stock's negative reaction.

Axis Bank shares dropped 5% in early trading on Monday, making the stock one of the notable decliners on the Nifty 50. The decline came despite the lender reporting a 23% year-on-year rise in net profit, which stood at Rs 7,114 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. While the earnings figure exceeded market expectations, the stock failed to maintain its momentum from the previous session, reflecting investor caution regarding the bank's profitability metrics.

Financial Performance and Asset Quality

For the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, Axis Bank recorded a net interest income of Rs 14,646 crore, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period last year. A key positive takeaway from the latest results was the improvement in asset quality. The bank's gross non-performing assets, or the share of bad loans, decreased to 1.28% from 1.57% a year ago. Similarly, net non-performing assets dropped to 0.39%. This improvement suggests that the bank's efforts to manage its loan book are yielding results, keeping credit costs low at 0.7%.

Impact of Corporate Lending on Margins

Despite the growth in profit, the market's negative reaction highlights concerns over the bank's changing loan mix. Recent filings indicate an increased share of corporate lending in the total portfolio. In the banking sector, corporate loans typically carry lower interest rates than retail loans, which can lead to profit margin pressure if the bank relies too heavily on this segment. Analysts have noted that while this shift supports balance sheet growth, it may keep margins under pressure until at least the second half of the 2027 fiscal year. Investors are balancing the benefits of high-volume growth against the potential for thinner margins in the near term.

Brokerage Views and Market Context

Global research firms provided varying perspectives on the results. Jefferies kept a positive outlook, noting that the profit beat was supported by efficient management of operating expenses and lower credit costs. The firm highlighted that while the corporate loan focus impacts margins, future retail deposit growth and fee income are expected to support core profitability. Conversely, Bernstein categorized the quarterly performance as mixed. While acknowledging strong balance sheet expansion, the firm pointed to margin compression and weaker non-interest income as areas that constrained the bank’s operating performance. Investors will be monitoring how the bank manages its deposit base and pricing strategies in coming quarters to protect its net interest margins amid the current interest rate environment.
