Axis Bank CEO Signals Possible RBI Rate Hike, Flags Lending Risks

Axis Bank CEO Amitabh Chaudhry has warned of a potential RBI interest rate hike by late 2026, citing the need for currency stability. He also cautioned that massive inflows from FCNR(B) deposits could pressure banks into risky lending practices if not managed carefully.

Axis Bank Managing Director and CEO Amitabh Chaudhry has signaled that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may shift its stance on interest rates before the end of the year. Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest, the CEO suggested that a rate hike could occur in October or December 2026, primarily to maintain currency stability amid a narrowing interest rate gap between India and the United States.

While the RBI has maintained a repo rate of 5.25 percent for several meetings, global economic pressures are creating a scenario where policymakers may feel compelled to act. For investors, this creates a potential shift in the banking environment, as higher interest rates typically influence both the cost of funds and the interest income for financial institutions.

Beyond the outlook on interest rates, Chaudhry highlighted a critical concern regarding liquidity management within the Indian banking sector. Following a recent RBI swap facility, banks have seen a significant surge in Foreign Currency Non-Resident Bank (FCNR-B) deposits. These inflows reached $127.2 billion by August 31, 2026. While such deposits provide banks with more capital, the challenge lies in how effectively that money can be deployed into the economy.

Chaudhry warned of the danger of so-called abnormal lending. When banks hold excess capital, the pressure to deploy those funds to earn interest can lead to a decline in lending standards. If banks rush to give out loans just to put the extra money to work, it may result in lower credit quality and higher risks of bad loans in the future. This puts the spotlight on how banks prioritize stable, quality growth over aggressive expansion.

Axis Bank shares, which have been trading around the ₹1,245 level, are being watched as the broader sector grapples with these liquidity dynamics. Investors should note that while high liquidity can support credit growth, it also brings the challenge of maintaining profit margins and keeping loan books healthy. This delicate balance between using available funds and avoiding risky lending will be a key factor for the banking industry in the coming quarters.

Looking ahead, market observers will closely monitor the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee minutes and official RBI announcements for any change in the central bank's tone. The most important updates for investors to track will be data on credit deployment, changes in Net Interest Margins (NIMs), and management commentary regarding loan quality in the face of these high deposit inflows.
