Detailed Coverage :

Japanese automaker Honda Motor is set to transform India into a global manufacturing center for its new electric vehicle, the Honda 0 α (alpha). The prototype for this futuristic car was showcased at the recent Japan Mobility Show. Developed with both Indian and Japanese markets in mind, along with other Asian countries, the Honda 0 α (alpha) is slated for its India debut in fiscal year 2026-27. Manufacturing will take place at Honda's existing plant located in Alwar, Rajasthan.

During the unveiling, Honda Motor Co. President and Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe highlighted that this initiative aligns with the company's overarching goals of achieving carbon neutrality and eliminating traffic collision fatalities by 2050.

Takashi Nakajima, Managing Director and CEO of Honda India, emphasized India's critical importance, stating it is one of the top three global markets for the company's strategic focus and investments, alongside the United States and Japan. Despite Honda's current smaller business scale in India compared to the US or Japan, its future ambitions are substantial. Nakajima indicated that while expanding the product lineup will take several years, significant progress is anticipated. He described India as a highly promising market, aiming to drive strong growth in Honda's four-wheeler business by enhancing both brand presence and sales volumes. The company also acknowledges challenges with higher ethanol blending ratios but is confident in its engineers' ability to address them.

Impact: This development is expected to significantly boost India's manufacturing capabilities in the electric vehicle sector, create new job opportunities, and potentially attract further foreign investment in the automotive industry. It could also spur growth in the domestic supply chain for EV components.
