Tata Motors surpassed Mahindra & Mahindra in domestic passenger vehicle dispatches for the first half of fiscal year 2027. Backed by a 59% jump in utility vehicle sales, Tata moved into the number two spot as industry volumes climbed 28%.
A Shift in Domestic Market Share
Tata Motors has reclaimed the second position in India's passenger vehicle segment, edging out Mahindra & Mahindra during the first six months of the 2027 fiscal year. Data provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers confirms that Tata dispatched over 390,000 units between April and September, marking a 43% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
Utility Vehicle Dominance
The ascent for Tata Motors was primarily driven by a robust 59% expansion in its utility vehicle dispatch figures. While the company faces intense competition from industry leader Maruti Suzuki, this performance highlights the success of its current product pipeline in capturing consumer interest. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra reported domestic dispatches slightly under 360,000 units, representing a 20% growth rate despite significant advancements in its own electrification strategy.
The EV Influence
Electrification remains a critical driver for Mahindra & Mahindra, which saw its combined electric SUV dispatches climb 82% to 42,338 units. These models now account for nearly 12% of the company's total passenger vehicle volume, up from 7.8% a year prior. While Tata Motors continues to lead the volume race, the lack of granular data regarding its specific electric vehicle dispatches makes a direct comparative assessment of pure EV market dominance difficult. The broader domestic passenger vehicle sector remains healthy, recording an overall dispatch increase of 28.3% to reach approximately 2.64 million units over the April to September period.
