Tata Motors October Sales Rise 23% Led by EV Surge

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles recorded 75,426 unit sales in October 2026, driven by a 21% rise in local demand and a 75% jump in electric vehicle sales. While volumes remain strong, investors are tracking rising input costs that may impact profit margins in the coming months.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported a 23% increase in total sales for October 2026, delivering 75,426 units compared to the same period last year. This growth was primarily driven by domestic demand, which climbed 21% to reach 73,894 units. The company also saw a sharp expansion in exports, which rose to 1,532 units from a much smaller base a year ago.

The electric vehicle (EV) segment continues to be a major growth driver for the company. EV sales saw a 75% year-on-year increase, reaching 16,244 units. This shift highlights the brand's focus on electric mobility and the growing consumer interest in sustainable transport options within the domestic market.

While sales volumes remain robust, the broader financial context presents some challenges. In the recently reported results for the second quarter of the 2027 financial year, the company's commercial vehicle division posted a consolidated operating margin, or EBITDA margin, of 10.9%. Despite healthy volume growth, the company has faced pressure on these margins due to fluctuating costs.

A key area for investors to track is the impact of rising input costs. Prices for essential raw materials like steel and rubber have been increasing, which squeezes the difference between the cost of production and the selling price. Management has indicated that these rising costs could put further pressure on profit margins, potentially by 150 to 200 basis points in the third quarter. Successfully managing these costs while maintaining volume growth will be important for the company's financial performance.

Additionally, the growth in the commercial vehicle sector is showing signs of moderation as the base for comparison becomes higher compared to last year. This environment makes cost management even more critical. The company is set to hold a board meeting on November 13, 2026, to discuss the financial results for its passenger vehicle division. Investors may watch this update to understand how the management plans to balance the current volume growth against the ongoing pressure on profit margins and raw material costs.
