Sona Comstar Plans Capex Hike After Strong Q2 Performance

Sona BLW Precision Forgings intends to increase its annual capital spending beyond the current ₹500–600 crore level to fund R&D and new capacity. This follows a strong quarter with revenue at ₹1,536 crore and a 29% profit jump. Investors are watching this shift, as electric vehicle products now contribute over half of the company’s automotive revenue.

Sona BLW Precision Forgings has announced plans to ramp up its annual capital spending to support research and development and capacity expansion. This move follows a period of strong financial performance, with the company reporting a revenue of ₹1,536 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, a 35% increase compared to the same period last year.

The company’s focus on the electric vehicle segment is rapidly becoming the main driver of its business. Revenue from battery electric vehicles grew by 129% year-on-year, and this segment now accounts for 51% of its total automotive revenue. To maintain this growth, management plans to push its annual spending beyond the current range of ₹500–600 crore. This investment is intended to ensure the company can meet the rising demand for newer technologies, such as rear radar sensors and advanced gear systems for electric transport.

Financial momentum remains healthy, with the company recording a net profit of ₹223 crore for the quarter, reflecting a 29% jump. A major factor supporting this spending is the order book, which remains strong. The company secured ₹3,600 crore in new orders during the recent quarter, bringing its total net order book to ₹25,100 crore. This consistent flow of new business provides the long-term visibility required for such heavy capital commitments.

However, there are factors that investors should consider. While business is growing, profit margins—which were at 23% in the latest quarter—remain sensitive to fluctuations in raw material and freight costs. Additionally, the company’s stock recently hit a record high of ₹882 in late October 2026, marking a significant rally over the past year. Investors may track whether the company can sustain its growth while managing these higher valuation levels and adapting to changing global electric vehicle adoption rates, which can directly impact future demand.

Looking ahead, the primary focus for the company will be the successful execution of these new projects. Investors will likely monitor how effectively the company manages costs during this expansion phase and whether it can successfully navigate potential shifts in global supply chains. Management's future commentary regarding the timeline of these projects and their ability to maintain profitability amidst price volatility will be important updates to follow.
