India as a Strategic Hub
Skoda Auto views India not just as a burgeoning market but as a critical global manufacturing and export base. Martin Jahn, Skoda Board Member (Sales & Marketing), highlighted India's resilience, strong economic growth, and favorable demographics as key drivers for this strategic pivot. The company is actively developing products tailored for the Indian consumer, aiming to overcome the complexities of this vast automotive landscape.
Product Expansion and EV Push
The automaker has identified gaps in its current Indian lineup and plans to introduce new models, including an electric vehicle. While the specific EV model is yet to be decided, its introduction is deemed essential. Jahn also noted opportunities in the mid-size SUV segment to complement the existing small and large SUV offerings. Skoda India Brand Director Ashish Gupta elaborated on aggressive plans, targeting 90% market penetration by 2026 through expansion into smaller towns and existing markets, alongside an all-time high volume projection for this year.
Leveraging the India-EU FTA
A significant aspect of Skoda's strategy involves utilizing India as a manufacturing hub for exports, particularly to Europe, contingent on the finalization of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This pact could facilitate smoother trade, allowing Skoda to export more vehicles assembled in India and potentially import specific European models that appeal to Indian customers. The company already exports from India to North Africa and the Middle East, assembling the Kushaq SUV from completely knocked-down (CKD) kits. The Czech firm believes Indian-produced models are well-suited for various non-European markets.
Profitable Growth and Policy Outlook
Skoda's expansion in India is framed around achieving profitable market share, balancing volume with financial health and customer satisfaction. Regarding government policy, Jahn expressed hope for decisions on electric mobility that are aligned with market realities and customer needs, cautioning against overly ambitious political targets that may not materialize. Skoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer underscored the updated Kushaq's role as a product reinforcing India's importance as a springboard for international market growth.
