SML Mahindra Targets 12% CV Market Share by FY2031

SML Mahindra aims to capture 12% of the Indian commercial vehicle market by 2031, targeting 20% by 2036. The company is focusing on electric bus expansion and synergy benefits after its acquisition by Mahindra & Mahindra. Investors may track the company's ability to protect profit margins against rising costs and intense industry competition from peers.

SML Mahindra, following the acquisition of a 58.96% controlling stake by Mahindra & Mahindra, has announced a long-term growth strategy to increase its market share in the Indian commercial vehicle sector. The company plans to reach a 10% to 12% market share by the 2031 financial year, with a subsequent goal of exceeding 20% by 2036. This roadmap is part of a larger plan to integrate legacy truck and bus operations with the rebranded SML entity, aiming to streamline supply chains and leverage broader distribution networks.

Financial Performance and Recent Momentum

The company is building this strategy on a foundation of recent growth. In the 2026 financial year, SML Mahindra reported an operating revenue of ₹2,838 crore, marking an 18.3% increase, and a profit after tax of ₹160 crore, up 31.1%. Monthly sales figures also indicate positive momentum, with the company selling 1,175 units in August 2026, a 40% year-on-year increase, following sales of 1,603 units in July 2026. This performance comes as the company attempts to capitalize on fleet replacement demand and steady infrastructure investment across India.

Product Strategy and Electrification

A central pillar of the company's expansion is a shift toward electric mobility. Management has stated that it expects at least 10% of its bus portfolio to transition to electric models within the next two years. Alongside this push into green energy, the company recently debuted the BLAZO i-TRK, a new heavy-duty truck designed to compete in the current replacement market. These product launches are intended to diversify the company's offerings and reach a wider customer base.

Risks and Sector Context

While the company has set aggressive growth targets, investors may monitor several challenges that could affect the path ahead. The commercial vehicle sector in India is highly competitive, with established players such as Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland holding significant market shares, which may make gaining volume difficult. Furthermore, the company has faced margin pressure recently, with operating margins declining to approximately 10% in the fourth quarter of 2026. This pressure is largely driven by rising input and operational costs.

Moving forward, the primary monitorables for investors will be the company’s ability to maintain healthy profit margins while scaling production and the success of its operational integration. Tracking how the company manages cost inflation and whether its electric vehicle transition aligns with market demand will be important for assessing its long-term financial health.
