What Happened

Ola Electric Mobility announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Ola Cell Technologies, has received Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for its indigenously developed LFP 46100 cylindrical battery cell. This approval, granted under IS 16046 (Part 2):2018 / IEC 62133-2:2017 standards, marks Ola Electric as the first Indian company to achieve this certification for a cell designed and manufactured in the 46100 format. Following the announcement, the company’s stock saw a positive reaction, trading up by approximately 2.94% at ₹43.77.

Why The Certification Matters

In India, BIS certification is a mandatory requirement for selling lithium-ion batteries. It acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring that battery products meet strict Indian safety and performance benchmarks before they can be used in electric vehicles or energy storage systems. By manufacturing these cells in-house at its Krishnagiri Gigafactory rather than relying on imported cells from global suppliers, the company aims to reduce supply chain risks and control costs more effectively over the long term.

The move towards indigenous cell production is tightly linked to India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC).
