Ola Electric Mobility has approved a ₹1,000 crore rights issue to bolster its liquidity position. This decision follows recent capital-raising efforts, reflecting the need for funds as the company faces shrinking market share and stiff competition from legacy two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto.
Ola Electric Mobility has received approval for a rights issue to raise up to ₹1,000 crore in fresh capital. In a rights issue, a company offers existing shareholders the chance to buy additional shares, typically as a way to raise funds quickly without tapping public markets or banks. This move adds to the company’s recent financial activity, which includes a separate board approval for a ₹1,500 crore raise just weeks earlier and a ₹780 crore institutional placement conducted in June.
The need for recurring capital comes as the electric two-wheeler manufacturer navigates a period of intense competition. Data from the government's Vahan portal indicates that Ola Electric's monthly registration market share fell to 6.1% in September, a decline from the 7.6% recorded in August. As legacy automobile companies—including Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor, and Hero MotoCorp—expand their electric vehicle offerings, Ola Electric is seeing increased pressure on its ability to maintain its market position, leading to a drop to the fifth spot in monthly registration rankings.
From a financial perspective, the company is dealing with a challenging sales environment. In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Ola Electric reported operational revenue of ₹455 crore, down from ₹828 crore in the same period last year. While the management has shown progress in cost management by narrowing its net loss to ₹336 crore—an improvement from the ₹428 crore loss reported a year prior—the decline in sales volume to 43,062 units underscores the difficulty of maintaining growth in a crowded market.
For investors, the primary monitorable remains the company's cash flow management and its ability to turn around the current decline in market share. As the company continues to rely on capital raises to fuel operations, shareholders will likely watch for updates on how these funds are deployed, whether the company can stabilize its sales volume, and if it can regain competitive ground against traditional manufacturers that are rapidly capturing market demand.
