Michelin Starts Local Production of Premium Tyres in Chennai

French tyre giant Michelin has begun manufacturing premium passenger car tyres at its Chennai plant. This move aims to serve India's growing premium vehicle market while supporting exports to regions like North America and Europe. The facility now produces tyres ranging from 16 to 22 inches, following an investment of approximately ₹686 crore for this specific production line.

Michelin has officially commenced the local production of passenger car tyres at its manufacturing facility in Chennai. This strategic shift is designed to cater to the rising demand for premium vehicles in India, where consumers are increasingly shifting toward larger SUVs that require higher-performance components. By localizing production, the company aims to move closer to its end-users while utilizing its Indian facility as a global hub.

Investment and Operational Strategy

The initiative to produce tyres locally follows a commitment made by the company about 18 months ago. Michelin invested approximately ₹686 crore, or about €76 million, to establish this dedicated passenger car tyre production line. This is in addition to the initial ₹2,800 crore investment the company made in its Chennai plant back in 2009. Commercial production at the expanded facility began in June following a year-long installation and commissioning phase.

According to the company, the Chennai facility utilizes the same machinery, raw materials, and quality standards as Michelin’s other global manufacturing sites. Management clarified that while manufacturing locally initially carries a higher cost, consumer pricing will remain tied to the value of the product rather than the production location. The premium tyres produced range from 16 to 22 inches, with retail prices starting from ₹10,000 depending on the size specifications.

Market Focus and Export Potential

Initially, the company is prioritizing the premium replacement market within India. As production capacity grows, the plan is to supply original equipment manufacturers and increase exports. The plant is positioned to support overseas demand in regions such as West Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. This dual focus on domestic and international markets is part of the company's broader effort to integrate India into its global supply chain.

While the expansion highlights Michelin's focus on premiumization, the company faces inherent risks typical of the automotive components sector, including fluctuations in raw material costs, such as rubber and crude oil derivatives. Furthermore, the success of this local production will depend on how effectively the company can scale operations and manage demand volatility in both the domestic and global markets. Investors may monitor the production ramp-up, the shift toward supplying original equipment manufacturers, and how the company manages margin pressure amidst potential global supply chain changes. The next key update to track will be the growth in output volumes and the expansion of the dealer network to support the new locally manufactured range.
