Mercedes-Benz Plans India Expansion After Record Sales

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has announced an aggressive model launch plan for India, cementing the country's role as a vital global production and R&D hub. This follows a strong performance in the first half of 2026, even as the luxury automaker navigates cost pressures and currency fluctuations.

Mercedes-Benz is shifting its focus toward deeper operations in India, aiming to use the country as a major global center for both technology and vehicle production. During the 66th Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Annual Convention, CEO Ola Källenius confirmed plans for an aggressive rollout of new models in the Indian market, signaling a long-term commitment to the region.

This strategy comes at a time when the luxury automaker is seeing strong demand locally. In the first half of 2026, Mercedes-Benz India reported its highest-ever half-year sales, retailing 9,768 vehicles. This represents a 9% growth compared to the same period last year, showing that the demand for luxury vehicles in India remains resilient despite broader economic challenges.

The company is moving beyond simple assembly in India. Källenius highlighted that the Indian market is now a key part of the brand’s global innovation chain. The company’s Bengaluru research and development center, which is the largest R&D facility for the automaker outside of Germany, is central to this plan. As the center celebrates its 30th year, the automaker is increasingly relying on local engineering talent to drive global projects, ranging from software development to future vehicle design.

While the expansion plans are ambitious, the company faces real-world business challenges. Mercedes-Benz has been dealing with macroeconomic headwinds, specifically volatility in the Euro-INR exchange rate. Because the company relies on imported components for many of its high-end models, fluctuations in currency can impact production costs. Additionally, persistent inflation in raw materials and logistics has added pressure to profit margins.

To manage these costs, the company has implemented multiple price hikes throughout 2026 to protect profitability. Looking ahead, the automaker is following a balanced strategy, continuing to offer a mix of internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, and electric vehicles to cater to changing consumer preferences. Investors and market observers will likely monitor how the company balances this aggressive model offensive with the need to maintain stable margins amid ongoing currency and supply chain pressures.
