Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Launched in India at ₹3.1 Crore

Mercedes-Benz has launched the electric G580 EQ in India, priced at ₹3.1 crore, blending its iconic off-road design with new electric technology. This move aligns with the automaker's strategy to increase its global electric vehicle sales, even as it navigates a challenging luxury auto market with reduced annual sales guidance.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the G580 with EQ Technology in India, entering the luxury electric SUV segment with a price tag of ₹3.1 crore (ex-showroom). The vehicle retains the traditional, rugged silhouette of the classic G-Wagon, signaling the company's attempt to keep its brand heritage alive while shifting toward electric powertrains.

From a technical perspective, the vehicle is powered by four independent electric motors, one for each wheel, generating 587 horsepower and 1,164 Newton-metres of torque. Features such as the 'G-Turn'—which allows the vehicle to pivot on its own axis—and a 'transparent bonnet' camera system are designed to maintain its off-road reputation. For the luxury carmaker, the strategy is clear: transition iconic, high-margin models to electric platforms to maintain relevance without sacrificing the brand identity that has defined the G-Wagon for decades.

While this launch targets the high-end luxury niche in India, it also highlights the broader strategic direction of the parent company, Mercedes-Benz Group AG. The automaker is pushing to raise the share of electrified vehicles to 23-25% of its total global sales in 2026. However, the business environment remains complex. While the company reported a 22% increase in operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, it also recently lowered its full-year 2026 car sales forecast. This adjustment reflects broader challenges, particularly persistent demand softness in the Chinese market, which is a major consumer of luxury vehicles.

For investors observing the global luxury automotive sector, this rollout serves as a case study in how manufacturers are managing the transition. The luxury segment is facing intense competition, both from established rivals and new entrants focusing on electric platforms. Success for the G580 EQ will depend not just on its technological features, but on whether the demand for such high-ticket electric vehicles remains resilient despite global economic uncertainties.

Investors may monitor how the company balances its ambitious electrification targets with the reality of fluctuating demand in key markets like China and Europe. Additionally, the ability of the brand to maintain its pricing power in the face of rising competition in the premium EV space will be a critical factor in protecting profit margins. The next important update to track will be the company’s progress toward its annual electric vehicle sales targets and any further revisions to global sales guidance as market conditions evolve.
